Joaquim Tenreiro
Joaquim Tenreiro (1992–1906) was a pioneer of modern Brazilian furniture design, known for blending European craftsmanship with tropical modernism. Born in Portugal and based in Rio de Janeiro, he brought artisanal precision to Brazil’s modernist movement, shaping an aesthetic of lightness, proportion, and restraint. Rejecting colonial heaviness, he used jacaranda, cane, and wicker to create elegant, functional forms. His Three-Legged Chair and woven cane works embody clarity and grace, defining a new national design language. Tenreiro’s studio trained key Brazilian designers, and his legacy endures in MoMA, MAM Rio, and major design collections.
